Rebuilding for the Future
In May 2024, RTD launched a historic, multi-phased project to reconstruct its oldest light rail infrastructure—a first in RTD’s history.
For more than 30 years, the Downtown Loop has been at the heart of Denver’s transit system. Originally opened in 1994 with just 5.3 miles of track, it has since grown to serve 10 stations on the D, H, and L lines, carrying more than 300 light rail trains through downtown every day.
Now, RTD is reinvesting in this vital connection to ensure its strength and reliability for the next 30 years. By modernizing the original track and infrastructure, we’re keeping the system safe, resilient, and ready to serve Denver for decades to come.
Full depth reconstruction of five light rail intersection/track crossings in Downtown Denver. These intersections were located at 15th & California, 15th & Stout, 17th & California, 17th & Stout, and 19th & Broadway.
This is more than maintenance—it’s an investment in the future of transit and the communities we serve.
"Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project "I have been reflecting on the incredibly successful first phase of the Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project. I want to commend you and your team at KCI Construction for your partnership and the numerous contributions you made to prioritize communications with local businesses and stakeholders ahead of work. I extend my sincere appreciation for all your efforts to maximize access around the busy downtown project sites, coordinate with adjacent projects and minimize impacts to local businesses during construction. I can confirm that RTD received significant positive feedback, especially following KCI’s early completion of work on the project. Moreover, it was a pleasure to work alongside you and see the difference you made by personally connecting with business owners ahead of the work and your responsiveness to their questions or concerns as construction progressed. When all goes this well, the high bar of excellence is achieved, and I want to extend my gratitude to you for your commitment as a project partner to upholding RTD’s mission to make lives better through connections."
